Asian handicap quarter lines: how -0.25 and -0.75 bets settle
A quarter line splits the stake equally between the two half-step lines either side of it. A bet on -0.25 is half on 0 and half on -0.5. A bet on -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1. Each half settles on its own, so a bet can be part won or part lost.
What a quarter line is
A quarter line is an Asian handicap whose number ends in .25 or .75, such as -0.25, -0.75, +0.25 or +0.75. It is not a new kind of result. It is a way of writing two bets of equal size as one. The wider picture of handicaps is in how football handicap bets settle; this guide goes deeper on the split.
The split is how the line is defined: the stake is divided into two equal halves, placed on the half-step lines either side of the quarter. Nothing else is added. Once you know the two neighbours, every outcome follows by ordinary arithmetic.
The two neighbours of each line
Take the number on the slip and move a quarter up and a quarter down. The two results are the lines that carry half the stake each.
| Line on the slip | Half of the stake on | Other half on |
|---|---|---|
| -0.25 | 0 | -0.5 |
| -0.75 | -0.5 | -1 |
| +0.25 | 0 | +0.5 |
| +0.75 | +0.5 | +1 |
A whole line (0, -1, +1) returns the stake on an exact tie after the handicap. A half line (-0.5, +0.5) cannot tie, so it wins or loses outright. A quarter line mixes one of each, which is why it can end with part of the stake returned.
Step by step: -0.25 on the home team
Illustrative example. A stake of KES 1,000 on home -0.25 at decimal odds of 1.90. The stake is treated as KES 500 on 0 and KES 500 on -0.5. The same odds apply to each half.
- Home wins by any margin. The 0 half wins: 500 x 1.90 = KES 950. The -0.5 half wins: 500 x 1.90 = KES 950. Return is KES 1,900, a profit of KES 900.
- The match is drawn. The 0 half is a tie and the KES 500 is returned. The -0.5 half loses. Return is KES 500, a loss of KES 500.
- Home loses. Both halves lose. Return is nil, a loss of KES 1,000.
The draw is the only result that makes -0.25 different from a plain win bet. It turns a full loss into a half loss.
Step by step: -0.75 on the home team
Illustrative example. The same KES 1,000 at odds of 1.90, now on home -0.75. The stake is KES 500 on -0.5 and KES 500 on -1.
- Home wins by two or more goals. After either handicap the home side is still ahead, so both halves win. Return is KES 1,900, a profit of KES 900.
- Home wins by exactly one goal. The -0.5 half wins: 500 x 1.90 = KES 950. The -1 half ends level after the handicap and the KES 500 is returned. Return is KES 1,450, a profit of KES 450.
- Draw or home defeat. Both halves lose. Return is nil, a loss of KES 1,000.
The one-goal win is the result that separates -0.75 from -0.5. On a -0.5 line it is a full win. On -0.75 it is a half win.
All results side by side
The table gathers the examples above, with the mirror lines worked the same way. Each cell shows the return on a KES 1,000 stake at odds of 1.90, with the status in brackets.
| Home result | -0.25 | -0.75 | +0.25 | +0.75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wins by 2 or more | KES 1,900 (win) | KES 1,900 (win) | KES 1,900 (win) | KES 1,900 (win) |
| Wins by 1 | KES 1,900 (win) | KES 1,450 (half win) | KES 1,900 (win) | KES 1,900 (win) |
| Draw | KES 500 (half loss) | KES 0 (loss) | KES 1,450 (half win) | KES 1,900 (win) |
| Loses by 1 | KES 0 (loss) | KES 0 (loss) | KES 0 (loss) | KES 500 (half loss) |
| Loses by 2 or more | KES 0 (loss) | KES 0 (loss) | KES 0 (loss) | KES 0 (loss) |
Check the +0.75 cell when home loses by one. The +0.5 half loses. The +1 half ends level after the handicap, so KES 500 comes back and KES 500 is lost, which is a half loss.
Reading the other side of the line
Home -0.25 and away +0.25 are the two sides of one line. Where the home bettor has a half loss on a draw, the away bettor has a half win. Where home wins by one on -0.75, the away side on +0.75 has a half loss, since its +0.5 half loses and its +1 half is returned.
It helps to ask two questions. Which neighbouring line is a whole number? That half is returned on a tie. Which is a half number? That half wins or loses outright.
What the price means
The odds on a quarter line are one set of odds applied to both halves, so a half win is paid at a lower overall rate than the quoted figure. In the example, a half win returns KES 1,450 on KES 1,000, which behaves like odds of 1.45 for that result. Because part of the stake comes back in some results, quarter lines are priced differently from neighbouring half lines, and you cannot compare numbers across lines by eye.
The bookmaker's margin sits in the prices on both sides of every line. To measure it, use the method in how to work out bookmaker margin in football odds. The zero line is the same as draw no bet, and it is the whole-number half of both -0.25 and +0.25.
Which score counts
The split decides how much of the stake is on each line. It does not decide which goals are counted. That is set by the licensee's rules: normally the score at the end of normal time including stoppage time, and for a bet placed during play, either the full score or only goals after acceptance. Extra time and penalties usually do not count, as set out in extra time and penalties: bet settlement.
Regulation 23(1) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires a licensee to clearly display betting odds, rules and terms applicable to each bet. Regulation 23(2) bars altering the terms of a bet after it has been accepted, except as permitted by law or approved rules. Regulation 24(1) requires winning bets to be settled promptly and in accordance with the published rules.
If a settlement looks wrong
Write down the line as shown on the slip, the odds, the time of acceptance, the final score and the amount credited. Work through the table above for your line. If your figure and the credited amount differ, the steps in how to dispute a football bet settlement in Kenya apply.
A half win or half loss is still a bet on an uncertain match. Gambling is addictive, and the 18+ age limit applies to every bet. Set a limit before kick-off and play responsibly; the responsible gambling page lists the regulator's helpline.
Questions and answers
How does Asian handicap -0.25 work?
The stake is split into two equal halves: one on 0 and one on -0.5. If your team wins, both halves win. On a draw the 0 half is returned and the -0.5 half loses, so half the stake is lost. If your team loses, both halves lose.
How does Asian handicap -0.75 work?
Half the stake is on -0.5 and half on -1. A win by two or more goals wins both halves. A win by exactly one goal wins the -0.5 half and returns the -1 half, which is a half win. A draw or defeat loses both halves.
What does a half win mean in money?
Only half the stake is paid at the odds and the other half is returned. At odds of 1.90 on a KES 1,000 stake, the return is 500 x 1.90 plus 500, which is KES 1,450, a profit of KES 450.
Is +0.25 the opposite of -0.25?
Yes. +0.25 is half on 0 and half on +0.5. On a draw, the 0 half is returned and the +0.5 half wins, so a draw is a half win. This is the mirror of the half loss on -0.25 for the other team.
Are quarter lines shown as one bet or two on the slip?
Presentation varies. Some slips show one line such as -0.25 and some show 0, -0.5. Either way the rules published by the licensee that accepted the bet decide the split, so read them before the match.
