What happens to your bet if a football match is postponed or abandoned
The Kenyan rules do not fix one outcome. The licensee's published rules decide whether a bet on a postponed or abandoned match is voided and the stake returned, kept open for a rescheduled date, or settled on markets already decided. Many rule books void it, but you must read the one that governs your bet.
Why a bet needs a played match
A football bet is a question about a match: who wins, how many goals, who scores. The question can be answered only if the match is played to the point the market needs. When it is not, the bet has no result to settle on.
That gap is filled by the rules the licensee publishes. The settlement basics in how 1X2 and double chance bets settle assume a finished match, and this guide covers what happens when there is none.
Postponed, suspended and abandoned
These words describe different situations, and a rule book usually treats each in its own way. The definitions below are the common reading of the terms, not a legal definition.
| Situation | What has happened | Questions the rule book answers |
|---|---|---|
| Postponed | The match did not start and is moved to a later date | How long the licensee waits for the new date before voiding |
| Suspended | Play stopped during the match, with a plan to resume | Whether bets stay open for the restart and for how long |
| Abandoned | Play stopped during the match and will not be completed | Which markets are void and which stand as already decided |
| Cancelled | The match will not be played at all | Whether stakes are returned straight away |
The same event can be described differently by a club, a league and a bookmaker. For your bet, only the licensee's wording counts.
The usual outcomes
Rule books differ, but three outcomes recur. A bet is void and the stake is returned. A bet stays open and is settled when the match is played on a rescheduled date. A bet is settled because the market was already decided when play stopped.
Which one applies often depends on a time limit and on the market. A bookmaker may, for instance, wait a stated number of hours or days for a postponed match and void after that. The number is whatever the licensee's rules say, and this guide does not state one because there is no universal figure.
Postponement and abandonment compared
The table sets out how a typical rule book might handle common cases. It is a generic illustration of the logic, not the rule of any operator.
| Case | Common treatment of an undecided bet | Common treatment of a decided market |
|---|---|---|
| Match postponed before kick-off | Void after the stated waiting period, or kept open if played within it | Not applicable, nothing is decided |
| Match abandoned after kick-off | Void and stake returned | May stand if the outcome cannot change |
| Abandoned match later replayed from the start | Void, because the replay is a different match | Depends on the rules |
| Match suspended and resumed within the stated period | Stays open and settles on the full result | Settles on the full result |
Illustrative example of a decided market
Illustrative example. A match is abandoned at 1-1. A rule book that settles decided markets would treat a bet on over 1.5 goals as won, because two goals already exist and nothing can remove them. It would treat a bet on over 2.5 goals as void, because a third goal might or might not have come.
A rule book that voids every bet on an abandoned match would return the stake on both. A KES 200 stake on the over 2.5 bet comes back as KES 200 under either approach, while the over 1.5 bet returns more than its stake only under the first. Read the totals logic in how over/under and BTTS bets settle to see which markets can be decided early.
What Kenyan law actually requires
The law does not say what happens to a bet on a postponed match. It sets the frame for the rules that do. Regulation 22(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 requires bookmaking terms and conditions to state all significant conditions that may affect a punter's decision and not to be misleading.
Regulation 23(1) requires a licensee to "clearly display betting odds, rules and terms applicable to each bet". Regulation 23(2) bars altering the terms of a bet after acceptance except as permitted by law or approved rules. Regulation 24(1) requires winning bets to be settled "promptly and in accordance with the published rules". Section 72(6) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires a licensee to avail to a player all the rules relating to its authorized games.
Handicaps and other lines
Lines that can return part of a stake follow the same logic when a match stops. A handicap bet depends on the margin at the end, so an abandoned match usually leaves it undecided. The mechanics are in how football handicap bets settle.
Checks before you place the bet
- Open the licensee's rules and find the section on postponed, suspended and abandoned matches.
- Note any waiting period and the market types it covers.
- Check whether the rule differs for single bets and for bets combined on one slip.
- Keep a screenshot or copy of the rules shown at the time you bet.
- Confirm the company holds a licence, using the steps in how to check a bookmaker licence in Kenya.
If you disagree with the outcome
Raise it first with the licensee's customer care centre, in writing where you can. If the matter is not resolved, the centre must refer it to the Authority. For an online bet, a party to the dispute may also appeal to the Gambling Appeals Tribunal within fourteen days from the date of the dispute.
A voided bet is not a loss and a settled bet is not a mistake. Gambling is addictive, and a refund does not change the odds on the next bet. If staking is getting hard to control, the responsible gambling page lists the regulator's helpline and the self-exclusion process.
Questions and answers
Is my stake returned if a match is postponed?
In many bookmaker rule books, yes: a bet on a match that does not start within a stated period is void and the stake is returned. The period and the wording differ between licensees, so the published rules of the licensee that accepted the bet are the answer, not a general convention.
What is the difference between postponed and abandoned?
Postponed usually means the match did not start and is moved to another date. Abandoned usually means it started but was stopped before the end and not finished. Rule books treat the two differently, and some add a third case, suspended, where the match is expected to resume.
If a match is abandoned, do bets already decided still win?
Some rule books settle markets that were decided beyond doubt at the moment of stopping, for example over 1.5 goals after a second goal, and void the rest. Others void every bet on the match. Which approach applies is stated in the licensee's rules.
Can a bookmaker change its rules after I have placed the bet?
Regulation 23(2) of the Conduct of Gambling Operations Regulations, 2026 says a licensee shall not alter the terms of a bet after it has been accepted, except as permitted by law or approved rules. Regulation 22(6) says terms and conditions cannot be amended without approval from the Authority.
Where do I complain if I think a bet was voided or settled wrongly?
Start with the licensee's customer care centre, which under regulation 9 exists to resolve complaints and refer unresolved ones to the Authority. Section 80 of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 lets a party to an online gambling dispute appeal to the Gambling Appeals Tribunal within fourteen days from the date of the dispute.
